To My Beloved Community
My response to the hate-fueled, anti-truth -telling campaign of white supremacists
I am a mom, a wife, and a long-time educator. Many of you know my story of when race became real to me at the age of five as a kindergartener. Experiences of racial trauma like this one led me to create an organization that would serve my community, ensuring that our children and our children’s children would not have these same experiences of racial harm while in the classroom. In recent weeks, this very organization, we are, once again found ourselves in the crosshairs of an attack, this one launched by NC House Speaker Tim Moore and other ill-informed, anti-truth-tellers. This is not the first time we have been the target of such an attack, nor will it be the last.
In the workshops our organization offers for educators and parents, we often talk about the need to zoom out so that we can see how a singular situation might actually be a pattern. For example, when it comes to police brutality against unarmed Black bodies, we often hear violence was an isolated incident or that an officer was just one “bad apple.” In zooming out, we can see that there are actually several isolated incidents and several “bad apples.” As such, these multiple occurrences actually form a pattern - a pattern of harm and mistreatment. The same is true with our current situation. Historically, white supremacists in positions of power have worked to disrupt the progress of people working to bring communities together. They leverage fear and division in our social and racial justice movements to amass more power.
In last week’s attack, powerful individuals in our state took an abstract theory and put a face to it. Mine. It’s much easier to direct negative energy, hatred, unfiltered racism, and ignorance toward a person. The systematic way in which these individuals transferred hate to Black bodies, mine in particular, is chilling, dangerous, and most importantly, not accidental.
With increased threats to the freedom to learn and historical reality happening nationwide, we must protect our children’s right to receive instruction through a lens that ensures the voices of Black and Brown people continue to be heard and validated. We must also protect our children’s right to exist, and strongly oppose the weaponizing of policies against LGBTQ+ children. Elected officials, educators, and parents are faced with a pivotal opportunity right now, to make sure North Carolina children have access to curriculum that respects, supports, and empowers all of them, their identities, and their historical backgrounds. Let our children learn!
As advocates for increased anti-racist education, we are not only unwavering supporters of Critical Race Theory as a pedagogical lens for all educational institutions, but we are also committed to the work of increasing resources for educators, parents/families, and students to aid in deepening their knowledge base of the theory and how it impacts our society.
Parents in our community want their children to attend schools where educators root their instruction in historical truth and the dignity of all people. Our young people deserve schools where their identities are understood, acknowledged, and respected. Our children deserve to learn how to think critically about the world so that they can better understand not only themselves, but also our current racialized circumstances. Our children deserve the truth.
There are courageous educators leading this work, and we are plans to continue connecting with them. We will continue our efforts of offering educator workshops rooted in an authentic and truthful history, hoping that some of these teachers take what they've learned to their entire school community.
It will take organized efforts, a rainbow coalition of people coming together to stand up and fight for a multiracial democracy, one rooted in the dignity and humanity of all. Those of us who value truth and democracy cannot afford to stand by and allow these dangerous, hate-fueled attacks to continue.
I, along with the individuals and organizations* signed to this letter, reject this hate-fueled, anti-truth telling campaign of white supremacists. It is wholly unacceptable for one of the highest-ranking politicians in the state of NC to elicit dog whistles and race baiting to engage and rile up a racist base. This calculated attack is dangerous and morally wrong. We are fighting for love. We are fighting for a state and country where everyone can experience the greatest versions of ourselves. We stand on the side of justice. #LetOurChildrenLearn #TruthBeTold
